AbstractThis research provides a guide to understanding, preparing and performing Arnold Schoenberg’s final opus: De Profundis, (Psalm 130) Op. 50B, within the context of the Hebrew chant that inspired it and Schoenberg’s other religious works. Theoretical and contextual analysis reveals significant discoveries relevant to an informed and accurate performance. "De Profundis" embodies Schoenberg’s mature and most flexible twelve-tone writing at the peak of his spiritual development, yet the work is rarely performed and generally only with professional choral ensembles. With the use of digital media and the results of this research, Schoenberg’s masterwork is now accurate and more accessible, restoring his original intentions for a new generation of choral directors, singers and audience.
